Groynes are examples of hard coastal protection structures which aim to protect the shoreline from erosion. They’re concrete wave dissipating blocks.
Coastal Erosion Australia manufacture groynes of various sizes to protect coastal infrastructure from erosion and inundation damage. We manufacture concrete Dolos (dolosses) and Tetrapods at our factory on north coast of NSW.
We are also manufacturers of permeable articulated concrete block mats and concrete erosion mats suitable for dune and coastal stabilisation and scour protection. Our products can be customised to assist in reef regeneration and sponge habitat restoration.
Our engineered concrete structures and mats can be used as permanent or temporary structures, which can be transported ready when they arrive on-site. They are easily and quickly installed, especially to remote or hard-to-access areas.

CONCRETE GROYNES & MATS TO PROTECT & PRESERVE OUR COASTLINE FROM EROSION
Coastal Erosion Australia make concrete groynes dolosses tetrapods and mats to help protect and preserve our coast and shorelineCONCRETE GROYNES
A groyne (in the U.S. groin) is a rigid hydraulic structure built perpendicularly from an ocean shore (in coastal engineering) or a river bank, interrupting water flow and limiting the movement of sediment.
It is usually made out of wood, concrete, or stone. In the ocean, groynes create beaches, prevent beach erosion caused by longshore drift where this is the dominant process and facilitate beach nourishment.
There is also often cross-shore movement which if longer than the groyne will limit its effectiveness. In a river, groynes slow down the process of erosion and prevent ice-jamming, which in turn aids navigation.
Groynes run generally perpendicular to the shore, extending from the upper foreshore or beach into the water.
All of a groyne may be underwater, in which case it is a submerged groyne.
They are often used in tandem with seawalls and other coastal engineering features. Groynes, however, may cause a shoreline to be perceived as unnatural.
Groynes are generally straight but could be of various plan view shapes, permeable or impermeable, built from various materials such as concrete, wood, sand, stone rubble, and rocks etc. Reference Wikipedia
DOLOSSES
A dolos or dolosse (plural) is a wave-dissipating concrete block used in great numbers as a form of coastal management. It is a type of tetrapod. Dolosse are used to build revetments for protection against the erosive force of waves from a body of water. The dolos was invented in 1963, and was first deployed in 1964 on the breakwater in South Africa. Reference Wikipedia
TETRAPODS
A Tetrapod is a form of wave-dissipating concrete block used to prevent erosion caused by weather and longshore drift, primarily to enforce coastal structures such as seawalls and breakwaters. Tetrapods are made of concrete,
and use a tetrahedral shape to dissipate the force of incoming waves by allowing water to flow around rather than against them, and to reduce displacement by interlocking. Reference Wikipedia
CONCRETE SCOUR MATS, BLOCKS & MATTRESSES
Concrete Revetment and Scour Protection Mats
Concrete Mats are used as a type of hard-armoured scour protection and defense against erosion and for dune stabilisation and wave dissipation. Concrete Mats are a type of revetment mattress that features a flexible, interlocking matrix of concrete shapes linked together to combine as one. They feature permeability, flexibility, vegetation encouragement, and habitat enhancement. They can be customised for reef regeneration or sponge habitat.
The concrete revetment mats are used for protection against shoreline and embankment erosion. The pliable construction ensures they can be laid to cope with variations in the embankment profile, maintaining maximum protection against erosion. Installation anchors are avaliable for vary slope angles and ground conditions.
We manufacture concrete mats under our sister company at same location as concrete wave blocks and groynes.
